Opera Pro Cantanti - Opera For the Singers

Opera Pro Cantanti is Canada's only repertory opera company.*  Each year, we present several great operas from the standard repertoire, alternating performances of these operas throughout our season. 

Opera Pro Cantanti performs nearly every Sunday evening, and on two Monday evenings each month. We will also occasionally have special performances on other days, or at other venues. Keep your eye on our Performance Schedule, so you don't miss one of our performances!

We perform our own productions of Verdi's La Traviata, Rigoletto and Macbeth (Nabucco is coming next February!) Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and Bellini's I Puritani and I Capuleti e i Montecchi. At the end of October, we will present a series of performances of a unique and special opera Bela Barok's Bluebeard's Castle.  During the next two seasons will be focusing our attention largely on Verdi operas; in anticipation of the Verdi Anniversary Year (2013).

Opera Pro Cantanti performs using traditional sets and costumes, created by the company members themselves.

Our performance venue is a beautiful little heritage hall, much smaller than any professional opera house. This intimate setting brings the opera closer to the audience, condensing all of the passion and intensity and allowing the audience to experience a rare connection with the singers onstage.

Our lead singers include company members who came to us to sing in the chorus but soon proved capable of taking on some of the most demanding roles in all of opera.



There are also some of the best voices in Canada to be heard on our stage! 

We feature singers who would be valued in opera houses all over the world (and some of them are!). You will be amazed at what you hear and see.

$18 general admission, $12 students and seniors.

All of our performances take place in the Cambrian Hall.

Owned and operated by the Vancouver Welsh Society, this beautiful hall has long been a landmark of Vancouver's Arts and Culture Community.

*Repertory Opera - Most opera companies perform one opera at a time; rehearsing for several weeks, then performing that opera 3 to 5 times. Once the performances are over, the production shuts down and the company moves on to the next opera. Opera in repertory works very differently. The operas are rehearsed and performed at the same time, alternating with the other operas chosen for that season. This means the company can perform any number of operas at a given time. The only limitation is whether or not the singers who have prepared the roles are available for a particular date. OPC assigns several singers to the same role whenever possible, which is what allows us to perform these operas so many times through the year.
